Funding Will Support Safety Initiatives, Programs in 15 Schools<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/span>The Safe Schools Endeavor, in partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation, has awarded nearly $30,000 in grants to 15 schools in Jefferson and Lewis counties for the 2018-2019 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Safe Schools Endeavor Fund committee received and reviewed a series of grant applications for programs that empower and support students, parents and faculty to create the safest school possible for schools in Jefferson and Lewis counties. This is the first year that grant recommendations have been made from the fund. Earlier this year, the Community Foundation offered a $20,000 matching grant for gifts <\/span>contributed to support the initiative.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThe Safe Schools Endeavor committee is incredibly grateful to all the individual, group, and business donors who have made this possible,\u201d said Erika Flint, steering committee chairwoman. \u201cBecause of their generosity, students, teachers and administrators at these 15 school buildings have been empowered to <\/span>make their school safer. We look forward to carrying this mission forward as each of the schools implement their funded projects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Jeff-Lewis BOCES Superintendent Stephen Todd said the Safe Schools Endeavor is a \u201cgame-changer\u201d because \u201cit\u2019s all about empowerment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis program empowers the school community and its members to become active agents in coming up with and implementing ways to make our schools safer,\u201d Mr. Todd said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Mr. Todd is also a member of the Community Foundation Board of Directors and serves on the Safe Schools Endeavor Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAny time we as a Community Foundation can empower people to take positive action, it\u2019s a wonderful thing,\u201d Mr. Todd added.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Community Foundation Board of Directors unanimously approved the following Safe Schools Endeavor grants during its quarterly meeting Dec. 18:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Alexandria Central School<\/b>, $2,200 to purchase the Raptor Security System.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Augustinian Academy<\/b>, Carthage, $1,234.25 to fund the \u201cChild Lures Prevention\u201d program.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Carthage Middle School<\/b>, $2,000 to fund \u201cPositive Behaviors Interventions and Supports\u201d <\/span>campus assemblies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Case Middle School<\/b>, Watertown City School District, $2,500 to purchase lockdown items.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Copenhagen Central School<\/b>, $1,945 to fund the \u201cMindful Educator Course.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Immaculate Heart Central School<\/b>, Watertown, $1,518 to fund the \u201cStop the Bleed Program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Indian River Middle School<\/b>, Philadelphia, $2,467.90, to purchase safety vests, radios and\u00a0<\/span>trauma bags.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>LaFargeville Central School District<\/b>, $1,418, to purchase manikins and an automated\u00a0<\/span>external defibrillator.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Lowville Academy and Central School<\/b>, $2,059.85 to purchase security monitors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Lyme Central School District<\/b>, $1,518 to fund the \u201cStop the Bleed Program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Sackets Harbor Central School District<\/b>, $2,100, to purchase security cameras.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Sherman Street School<\/b>, Watertown City School District, $2,500 to fund an anti-bullying assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>South Jefferson Middle and High schools<\/b>, $1,500 to fund a motivational speaker program.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Watertown City Schools Learning Center<\/b>, $2,500 to purchase a public address system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Watertown Middle and High <\/b>schools, $2,000 to fund the \u201cCampus Impressions\u201d program.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAn effort is always more powerful when the citizens and organizations of our community take a proactive role to make it happen. This provided a very loud statement that this is something important and valuable,\u201d said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. \u201cIf it helps provide additional safety for our community\u2019s most precious resources, it deserves our continued attention. There is more work to do and we look forward to the next opportunity to advance the mission.\u201d<\/p>\n
