George R. Davis Fund for Lowville Announces 2019 Opportunities<\/i><\/span> <\/b><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Nonprofit organizations that serve residents in the Village and Town of Lowville are encouraged to apply for 2019 grant funding through the George R. Davis Fund for Lowville at the Northern New York Community Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Mr. Davis was a longtime Lowville resident and served as a Lewis County judge for more than 20 years. This permanent charitable fund for the community became active following his death in 2010. <\/span>This year, up to $10,000 is available in grant funding through this community fund to support programs,<\/span> projects and initiatives that seek to improve the quality of life in Lowville.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>In 2018, four projects were awarded grant funding totaling $10,000. The recipients were:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Village of Lowville \u2014<\/b> $4,440 to assist with new informational and historical signs at the village \u201cFour Corners\u201d location.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Double Play Sports Community Center \u2014 <\/b>$3,500 to fund a feasibility study for a future building project.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Lowville Fire Department \u2014 <\/b>$1,060 to provide \u201ctake-home\u201d educational bags for children.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Lewis County Hospital Foundation \u2014 <\/b>$1,000 to revitalize the \u201cCandy Stripers\u201d program at Lewis County General Hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The deadline to submit a proposal for consideration is Friday, April 19, 2019<\/b>. Awards will be announced <\/span>following the Community Foundation\u2019s quarterly board meeting in June. About George R. Davis<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0\"\" <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Honorable George R. Davis lived almost his entire life in Lowville. Judge Davis, as he was known, <\/span>served for 20 years as Lewis County Judge from 1962 to 1983, previously serving as District Attorney.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 He was active in civic affairs throughout his life with a particular interest in local history, including the history of Lowville Academy where his father served as supervising principal for more than 35 years.\u00a0 <\/span>Judge Davis\u2019 devotion to his community was extraordinary. One of Judge Davis\u2019 lasting legacies is this unique community fund. <\/span><\/p>\n
