More Than $16,000 Will Support Safety Initiatives and Programs in 11 Schools<\/i><\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>WATERTOWN \u2014 <\/b>The Safe Schools Endeavor, in partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation, has awarded $16,237 in grants to 11 schools in Jefferson and Lewis counties for the 2019-2020 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Safe Schools Endeavor Fund steering committee received and reviewed 15 grant applications for programs that empower and support students, parents and faculty to create the safest schools possible in Jefferson and Lewis counties. This is the second year that grant awards have been made from the fund. Last year, the Safe Schools Endeavor awarded nearly $30,000 to 15 schools in the two counties.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cEach of these very worthy projects are only possible because of the businesses, groups, and individuals who gave generously to the Safe Schools Endeavor, knowing failure can only come from inaction,\u201d said Erika Flint, steering committee chairwoman. \u201cSeeing projects that have student participation and even one that is completely student-led at Thousand Island Central School is particularly satisfying and truly helps carry the mission of the Safe Schools Endeavor forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Steering Committee student representative Anna Spaulding, Copenhagen High School, agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cI love seeing our schools and students think outside the box to help keep our community safe,\u201d said Steering Committee student representative Anna Spaulding, Copenhagen High School. \u201cI enjoyed working with such an wonderful group and I look forward to seeing the end results of the projects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Community Foundation Board of Directors unanimously approved the following Safe Schools Endeavor grants:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Augustinian Academy<\/b>, Carthage, $1,725 to purchase security cameras and door barricades.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Beaver River Central School<\/b>, $1,725 to purchase a school \u201cvisitor management system.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Copenhagen Central School<\/b>, $700 to fund the trauma training for school staff.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • General Brown Junior\/Senior High School<\/b>, Dexter, $2,000 to fund an \u201cEmotion into Art\u201d program.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Lowville Academy and Central School<\/b>, Lowville, $2,250, to fund the \u201cStop the Bleed\u201d program.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Sackets Harbor Central School District<\/b>, $1,842, to purchase \u201cHalo Units\u201d to detect vaping\/smoking.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • South Jefferson Middle School<\/b>, Up to $650 to provide support for the \u201cSources of Strength\u201d program.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Thousand Islands High School<\/b>, Up to $2,000 to fund creation of a \u201cmindfulness room.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Watertown City Schools (Case Middle)<\/b>, $1,850 to fund the \u201cTotally Vocally\u201d program.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Watertown City Schools (Sherman Street School)<\/b>, $895 to fund a \u201cLeonardo Music\u201d assembly.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Watertown City Schools (Wiley Elementary School)<\/b>, Up to $600 to fund escape ladders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThese diverse grants have the ability to make a difference in each school where they are being deployed. The participation from donors and schools remains strong,\u201d said Rande Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. \u201cIt affirms that this is something we must remain steadfast in our efforts to do what we can as long as we can to promote safe and healthy environments for our community\u2019s most precious resources, our children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
