Davis Fund for Lowville Announces 2020 Funding Opportunities<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s5\">Nonprofit organizations that serve residents in the Village and Town of Lowville are encouraged to apply for 2020 grant funding through the George R. Davis Fund for Lowville of the Northern New York Community Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Mr. Davis was a longtime Lowville resident and served as a Lewis County judge for more than 20 years. This permanent charitable fund for the community became active following his death in 2010. This year, up to $10,000 is available in grant funding through this community fund to support programs, projects and initiatives that seek to improve the quality of life in Lowville.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>A three-person committee reviews grant applications for the George R. Davis Fund each year. The committee evaluates each proposal on its merits using the \u201cgreatest positive impact on the community\u201d as guiding criteria in making an award. Projects may be large or small.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>In 2019, four projects were awarded grant funding totaling $10,000. They were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p4\"><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Double Play Community Sports Center <\/b>\u2014 $4,250 to assist with start-up programming at a new \u201cTeen and Senior Activity Center.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Lewis County Amateur Hockey Association<\/b> \u2014 $3,500 to help the organization meet its fundraising goal to install new chiller lines at the Lewis County Skating Rink \/ Lowville Forest Park Pavilion.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Lewis County Historical Society<\/b> \u2014 $1,500 to support publication costs associated with a book it plans to publish in collaboration with the New York State Bar Association about the legal history of Lewis County.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Lowville Free Library<\/b> \u2014 $750 to support an educational lab for children ages 3 to 12 to introduce coding and teach students broader problem-solving skills, logic, sequencing, creativity, teamwork, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The deadline to submit a proposal for consideration is <b>Friday, April 24, 2020<\/b>. Awards will be announced following the Community Foundation\u2019s quarterly board meeting in June. Davis lived almost his entire life in Lowville. Judge Davis, as he was known, served for 20 years as Lewis County Judge from 1962 to 1983, previously serving as District Attorney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>He was active in civic affairs throughout his life with a particular interest in local history, including the history of Lowville Academy where his father served as supervising principal for more than 35 years.\u00a0 Judge Davis\u2019 devotion to his community was extraordinary.
