{"id":6366,"date":"2023-10-02T13:45:58","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T13:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnycf.org\/?p=5966"},"modified":"2023-10-02T13:45:58","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T13:45:58","slug":"boonville-cemetery-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnycf.org\/new\/boonville-cemetery-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Sawyer Community Fund Enables Boonville Cemetery Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"s1\\\"><i>Support <\/i><\/span><span class=\\\"s2\\\"><i>Will<\/i><\/span><span class=\\\"s1\\\"><i> Help Acquire Tools to Repair and Restore Tombstones<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span class=\\\"s1\\\"><b>BOONVILLE \u2014 <\/b>Restoration of several decades-old gravestones in the Boonville Cemetery will move forward thanks to support from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"s1\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>A $7,000 grant will enable cemetery trustees to purchase a tombstone jack to accomplish this meaningful restoration work and repair several broken, fallen, and tipped headstones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"s1\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>With the first burials in the late 1850s, Boonville Cemetery is one of the oldest in the area and it has become a priority to fix several gravestones. For the last three years, the association has updated digital records to enhance genealogy and research requests related to the 166-year-old cemetery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"s1\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Led by the cemetery\u2019s trustees and volunteers, the organization plans to gradually restore several gravestones in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<img class=\\\"wp-image-5965 size-large\\\" src=\\\"https:\/\/nnycf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/NNYCF_BoonvilleCemetery_Sawyer_102023-757x1024.jpg\\\" alt=\\\"\\\" width=\\\"757\\\" height=\\\"1024\\\" \/>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Fourteen grants totaling $58,050 were awarded this year from the Sawyer Community Fund to support projects and programs that broadly impact the quality of life for residents in Boonville, Constableville and Westernville.<span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund was established in 2018 as a geographic-specific fund to support programs, projects and initiatives that broadly impact and enhance the quality of life in Boonville, Constableville and Westernville in perpetuity. The Sawyers were passionate about the quality of life in their community, participating in many community activities and volunteering for several local organizations. Through the community fund, the Sawyer family established a lasting charitable resource that will positively impact these communities forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The application for the next grant cycle for funding from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund will be available in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p6\\\"><b>About Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer participated in many community events and activities through the years and served on local boards and committees. Mr. Sawyer was a Boonville native, served in the United States Army, and enjoyed a career at Layng Furniture Company and as a supervisor at Boonville\u2019s Erwin Park. Most notably, he was a talented musician. He played tenor saxophone in his high school band and clarinet with the Boonville Village Band. He frequently played with three separate drum and bugle corps in Boonville and Rome. Mr. Sawyer died in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Mrs. Sawyer completed a successful career of more than 45 years at Rome Savings Bank and was an avid follower of the stock market. She also served on the finance committee of Boonville United Methodist Church. She assisted organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, Dodge Pratt Northam Art and Community Center, the Erwin Library, and the Boonville Cemetery. Mrs. Sawyer died in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>In 2017, the Kenneth V. Sawyer and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Scholarship Fund was established through the Northern New York Community Foundation to benefit Adirondack Central School graduates. The endowed fund will award two scholarships each year forever, supporting the business and music pursuits of high school graduates from the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p6\\\"><b>About the Northern New York Community Foundation<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Since 1929, the Northern New York Community Foundation has invested in improving and enriching the quality of life for all in communities across Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Through partnerships with businesses and organizations, charitable foundations, and generous families <span class=\\\"s1\\\">and individual donors, the Community Foundation awards grants and scholarships from an endowment and collection of funds that benefit the region. Its commitment to donors helps individuals achieve their charitable objectives now and for generations to come by preserving and honoring legacies of community philanthropy while inspiring others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p4\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Community Foundation is a resource for local charitable organizations, donors, professional advisors and nonprofit organizations.
