{"id":6368,"date":"2023-10-16T13:30:24","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T13:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnycf.org\/?p=5996"},"modified":"2023-10-16T13:30:24","modified_gmt":"2023-10-16T13:30:24","slug":"boonville-search-rescue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnycf.org\/new\/boonville-search-rescue\/","title":{"rendered":"Sawyer Community Fund Grant Helps Youths Prepare for Safe Backcountry Excursions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\\\"p2\\\"><span class=\\\"s1\\\"><i>Grant Helps Boonville Search &amp; Rescue Hold Wilderness Training<span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>BOONVILLE \u2014 <\/b>Local youths will be more prepared for wilderness outings equipped with new skills to prevent someone from getting lost in the woods and to provide first aid when needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Thanks to a $1,575 grant from the <b>Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund<\/b> <b>of the Northern New York Community Foundation<\/b>, the Boonville Search and Rescue Association held its first compass and CPR\/wilderness\/first aid training with participants under the age of 13 this summer.<span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>This is the first time Boonville Search and Rescue offered training to help the community and youth better prepare for an accident in the backcountry. Grant funding supported purchase of training kits for the first course and future sessions.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<img class=\\\"wp-image-5995 size-large\\\" src=\\\"https:\/\/nnycf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/NNYCF_BoonvilleSR_Sawyer_101623-1024x720.jpg\\\" alt=\\\"\\\" width=\\\"1024\\\" height=\\\"720\\\" \/>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Fourteen grants totaling $58,050 were awarded this year from the Sawyer Community Fund to support projects and programs that broadly impact the quality of life for residents in Boonville, Constableville and Westernville.<span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund was established in 2018 as a geographic-specific fund to support programs, projects and initiatives that broadly impact and enhance the quality of life in Boonville, Constableville and Westernville in perpetuity. The Sawyers were passionate about the quality of life in their community, participating in many community activities and volunteering for several local organizations. Through the community fund, the Sawyer family established a lasting charitable resource that will positively impact these communities forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The application for the next grant cycle for funding from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund will be available in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p5\\\"><b>About Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer participated in many community events and activities through the years and served on local boards and committees. Mr. Sawyer was a Boonville native, served in the United States Army, and enjoyed a career at Layng Furniture Company and as a supervisor at Boonville\u2019s Erwin Park. Most notably, he was a talented musician. He played tenor saxophone in his high school band and clarinet with the Boonville Village Band. He frequently played with three separate drum and bugle corps in Boonville and Rome.<br \/>\nMr. Sawyer died in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Mrs. Sawyer completed a successful career of more than 45 years at Rome Savings Bank and was an avid follower of the stock market. She also served on the finance committee of Boonville United Methodist Church. She assisted organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, Dodge Pratt Northam Art and Community Center, the Erwin Library, and the Boonville Cemetery. Mrs. Sawyer died in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>In 2017, the Kenneth V. Sawyer and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Scholarship Fund was established through the Northern New York Community Foundation to benefit Adirondack Central School graduates. The endowed fund will award two scholarships each year forever, supporting the business and music pursuits of high school graduates from the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p5\\\"><b>About the Northern New York Community Foundation<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Since 1929, the Northern New York Community Foundation has invested in improving and enriching the quality of life for all in communities across Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Through partnerships with businesses and organizations, charitable foundations, and generous families <span class=\\\"s1\\\">and individual donors, the Community Foundation awards grants and scholarships from an endowment and collection of funds that benefit the region. Its commitment to donors helps individuals achieve their charitable objectives now and for generations to come by preserving and honoring legacies of community philanthropy while inspiring others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\\\"p3\\\"><span class=\\\"Apple-converted-space\\\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Community Foundation is a resource for local charitable organizations, donors, professional advisors and nonprofit organizations.
