The Syracuse Orchestra performance celebrates a North Country benefactor whose generosity continues to enrich the region through music<\/i><\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>CLAYTON \u2014 <\/b>The Northern New York Community Foundation invites the public to experience an evening of inspiring music at the annual Sidney T. Cox Memorial Concert<\/b> on Friday, July 10<\/b>, at 7:30 p.m.<\/b> at the Clayton Opera House<\/b>, featuring The Syracuse Orchestra.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Presented with support from the Community Foundation in partnership with the Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund (TIPAF), the annual concert honors the enduring legacy of Sidney T. Cox<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>This year\u2019s performance blends beloved classical masterworks with familiar favorites from Broadway and the silver screen. Audiences will enjoy selections from Wicked, The Sound of Music, Jurassic Park, Beauty and the Beast, Kiki\u2019s Delivery Service, and Wicked, alongside works by Aaron Copland, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Duke Ellington and others.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMr. Cox\u2019s legacy remains an enduring gift to our region through this annual event and in many other ways,\u201d Community Foundation President and CEO Rande S. Richardson <\/strong>said. \u201cFor nearly two decades, this concert has been a reminder of the power of philanthropy to create meaningful experiences that can enrich lives for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Following his death in 2005, the Northern New York Community Foundation established a permanent endowment to honor a transformative gift he provided through his estate as well as his devotion to the arts and the region. Since 2007, the fund has supported annual performances at the Clayton Opera House, creating a lasting cultural tradition for residents and visitors alike. The Community Foundation also separately administers a permanent endowment that supports TIPAF and the ongoing preservation and programming at the historic Clayton Opera House.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>A long-time Watertown resident, Mr. Cox was a journalist, composer, and public official. He joined the Watertown Daily Times staff as a reporter in 1949, covering Watertown and Canton, and then for five years was a political writer and legislative correspondent in Albany. He was executive secretary of the state Legislature\u2019s joint committee on winter tourism and subsequently was a research associate for the Assembly\u2019s Ways and Means Committee.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>He was named to the original Temporary State Commission on Tug Hill and served as vice chairman and acting chairman. Music remained his lifelong passion. An Army veteran and graduate of Cornell University with bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in music and English, Mr. Cox studied composition with renowned American composers Roy Harris, Aaron Copland, and Robert Palmer. His own works were performed by orchestras throughout the country, including what is now The Syracuse Orchestra, where he also served on the board of directors.<\/p>\n
