Community Foundation Awards Nearly $50,000 in Grants

July 2, 2015 by admin

The Northern New York Community Foundation’s board of directors recently approved a $15,000 grant to become a co-presenting sponsor to help launch WPBS-TV’s “GPS for Success” career exploration and development program. The grant will assist with costs related to the development and implementation of the multi-phase project.

“GPS for Success” is a multi-platform, interactive website where students and adults may learn more about local career opportunities, income potential, as well as education and training requirements in sixteen career clusters. Each cluster features interviews with representatives from the individual profiled sectors. It is designed to be a resource for students, adults, education providers, and employment and training agencies to explore career options and prepare for college and careers. WPBS-TV is collaborating on this program with the Greater Watertown-North Country Chamber of Commerce, Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation, Jefferson-Lewis BOCES, St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES and The Workplace. The WPBS-TV grant was part of nearly $50,000 in grants awarded this quarter.

Other grants approved by the Community Foundation’s board of directors are:

  • Orchestra of Northern New York – $15,000 in support of their 2015-16 Watertown concert season.
  • Trinity Concert Series – $5,000 in funding for the 2015-16 season.
  • Thousand Islands Land Trust – $5,000 to assist with the entrance expansion project at the Zenda Farms Preserve. This grant is made possible, in part, by the River Fund and the Grace L. Reinman Fund
  • Signature Music – $5,000 to provide support for summer camp scholarships for Jefferson and Lewis County school students. This grant is made possible by the Emma Phoebe Hurd Fund.
  • City of Watertown – $3,750 to assist with two fall tree planting projects and purchase equipment for volunteer efforts. This is made possible, in part, by the Carolyn Whitney Fund and the Walker Tree Fund.
  • Northern Choral Society – $1,000 to assist with orchestral support for its Christmas concert performances in December.

The Northern New York Community Foundation makes grants to support the work of non-profit organizations and provides scholarships to individuals in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties. This work is made possible by donors who have established permanent, charitable funds with the Foundation during their lifetimes or through their wills and have a general, broad and enduring interest in supporting the quality of life in the North Country.
