Grant Application Available for George R. Davis Fund for Lowville

February 28, 2017 by admin

The legacy of George R. Davis will be recognized again this year through the geographical fund benefiting the community that he loved. The grant application for the George R. Davis Fund for Lowville at the Northern New York Community Foundation is now available.

Mr. Davis spent most of his life as a Lowville resident and served as Lewis County judge for more than 20 years. Upon his death in 2010, Mr. Davis created a community fund that would benefit the citizens in the village and town of Lowville in perpetuity. Several non-profit organizations and community projects have garnered support through this permanent philanthropic resource.

“The legacy of George Davis continues to make a meaningful difference in Lowville. It is wonderful he had the generous foresight to find a way to forever impact the quality of life there and we are honored to be part of fulfilling that promise,” said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director.

In 2016, seven projects were awarded grant funding totaling $10,000. The recipients were:

  • Lowville Lions Club – $4,000 to assist with the beautification of the “four corners” location in the village of Lowville. This project was also supported through the Michael Brown Fund at the Community Foundation.
  • Town of Lowville – $1,350 for the restoration of 20 historic gravestones at Jackson Street cemetery.
  • Lewis County Search & Rescue – $1,250 to purchase new signage and lights.
  • Double Play Sports Community Center – $1,000 to enhance the organization’s scholarship program.
  • Mountain View Prevention Services – $1,000 in support of purchasing a “Buddy Bench” for use at a community playground.
  • Cornell Cooperative Extension of Lewis County – $900 to implement two community clubs focused on STEM-related objectives.
  • Hand in Hand Early Childhood Center, Inc. – $500 to improve the agency’s playground area.

This year, up to $10,000 will be awarded again to help fund projects, programs and initiatives in Lowville. The deadline to submit an application for consideration is April 21, 2017.
