Community Foundation Grant Improves Accessibility at Ogdensburg Public Library

May 9, 2025 by admin

$30,000 in Support Helps Replace Aging Handicap Lift; Project Now Underway

OGDENSBURG — A $30,000 Community Foundation grant is helping Ogdensburg Public Library improve accessibility for all patrons as work to replace an aging handicapped lift nears completion.

Library officials have been eager to construct a safe, modern entryway for all patrons, regardless of mobility. Installation of an interior lift and structure to protect it has been underway since March.

After years of temporary repairs, officials are nearing completion of a capital project to install a new handicap accessible lift and sheltered all-weather exterior. Patrons have been without handicap access since the existing lift failed last fall.

“With the increasing role libraries play as community centers, we have kept them as a focus of our grantmaking,” said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. “This builds upon our investments in libraries across our region and helps strengthen our collaboration and keep the Ogdensburg library accessible to all.”

The library is a community hub in the city, serving residents since 1922. Last year, the library saw more than 26,000 visitors, presented 230 programs and hosted 100 meetings.

The Community Foundation grant will help the library with the estimated $174,000 project. Grant support includes $5,000 from an individual donor.

“This grant is extremely important for the library, as it will help enclose our outside lift to work in all weather,” Executive Director Penny Kerfien said. “Ogdensburg Public Library is thrilled to receive this support and to continue our partnership with the Community Foundation.”

Thirteen public libraries across the region have established permanent endowment funds at the Foundation, which provide an additional source of income to support their missions. They include: Adams Center Free Library; Canton Free Library; Cape Vincent Community Library; Depauville Free Library; Friends of Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library, Watertown; Hawn Memorial Library, Clayton; Hay Memorial Library, Sackets Harbor; Lyme Free Library; Macsherry Library, Alexandria Bay; Mannsville Free Library; Massena Public Library; Ogdensburg Public Library; and Potsdam Public Library.

About the Northern New York Community Foundation

Since 1929, the Northern New York Community Foundation has invested in improving and enriching the quality of life for all in communities across Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

Through partnerships with businesses and organizations, charitable foundations, and generous families and individual donors, the Community Foundation awards grants and scholarships from an endowment and collection of funds that benefit the region. Its commitment to donors helps individuals achieve their charitable objectives now and for generations to come by preserving and honoring legacies of community philanthropy while inspiring others.

The Community Foundation is a resource for local charitable organizations, donors, professional advisors and nonprofit organizations. It also works to bring people together at its permanent home in the Northern New York Philanthropy Center to discuss challenges our communities face and find creative solutions that strengthen the region and make it a great place to live, work, and play.
