Air Products Greater Massena Community Fund Awards Second Round of Grants

February 11, 2025 By admin

Two Organizations Will Share $10,500 for Work in Greater Massena Community

MASSENA — Air Products, in partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation, is excited to announce the second round of grant awards from the Air Products Greater Massena Community Fund. This round of funding will allocate nearly $10,500 to two deserving organizations including:

  • Massena Public Library: A $6,736 grant will support the establishment of a Memory Café, providing a safe and engaging space for individuals with memory loss and their caregivers. The funds will be used to purchase materials and resources to enhance cognitive engagement and socialization including books, activities, puzzles, and games designed to stimulate brain activity, foster conversation, and promote multi-generational interaction.
  • Northern TRIBS Swimming: A $3,750 grant will help expand access to swimming lessons by offering scholarships to families facing economic hardship and providing staff training in water safety protocols to equip more children and families with life-saving swimming skills.

Launched in May 2024 through a $50,000 grant from the Air Products Foundation, the Greater Massena Community Fund aims to improve the quality of life for residents in the Greater Massena community.

An inaugural round of funding granted a combined total of $32,500 to The Holistic Life Foundation; The Salvation Army of Massena; The Massena Arts and Theater Association; The Police Activities League of Massena; and Massena Memorial Hospital to contribute to projects supporting education, health and wellness, arts and culture, and human services.

“We’re glad to have the opportunity to assist in meeting the needs of local organizations,” said Trip Oliver, director of government and community affairs at Air Products. “We recognize there are many local organizations doing valuable work in the Massena community and we want to support as many as possible. We look forward to extending the reach of our contributions to help make a positive impact on the community’s success for years to come.”

Congratulations to Watertown High School’s Forensic Science classes! The course instructors are recipients of the first grant award from the Deacon Bruce W. Daugherty Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation.

Deacon Daugherty’s family established the fund to honor his life and legacy after he passed away on St. Patrick’s Day last year.

Watertown’s Forensic Science class provides students with an engaging, hands-on introduction to the methods and critical thinking used in real-world criminal investigations.

The $1,492 grant funding was used to purchase corkboards for students to create “murder boards” for their final investigative project. The boards serve as visual displays of evidence, timelines, suspects, and forensic analyses, mirroring the work of actual crime scene investigators. Funding enhance instruction for 75 students in grades 11 and 12.

“Having tangible boards to display their findings makes the learning experience more authentic and helps students better understand how evidence connects to build a case,” Forensic Science Instructor Samantha Mrs. Freeman wrote in the grant application.
