Lewis County Attorney Also Appointed to Foundation Board of Directors

     WATERTOWN — Lewis County resident Cheryl R. Steckly was recently named Chair of the Northern New York Community Foundation Board of Directors.

     Mrs. Steckly retired in 2019 as superintendent of Lowville Academy & Central Schools after more than 35 years working in public education.

Community Foundation Grant Helps Grow Cape Vincent Community Garden

Micro-Grant Support Enables Improvement League Efforts to Stock Food Pantry

     CAPE VINCENT — A community garden in the village will continue to provide those in need with fresh produce thanks to a $1,000 Community Foundation micro-grant.

     Garden Manager Joanne Faulknham said the grant will help ensure the Cape Vincent Improvement League continues its mission to stock a community food pantry with locally grown foods.

Cary and Janet Brick Riverside Foundation Grant Supports River Hospital Program

Award Aids PTS Program for Servicemembers, Veterans, and First Responders

     ALEXANDRIA BAY — The Cary and Janet Brick Riverside Foundation, a Northern New York Community Foundation affiliate, has provided a grant to River Hospital to support its Post-Traumatic Stress Services program.

     A $1,000 grant was recently awarded to assist current servicemembers and military veterans, as well as those who serve their communities as first responders with Post-Traumatic Stress treatment.

     The hospital’s Post-Traumatic Stress Services, “works closely with our military members, veterans, and first responders to help heal invisible wounds through innovative care and treatment in their own back yard.”

Watertown High’s Brown Named First ‘Heroes of Democracy’ Award Recipient

Rising Senior Lauded for Collaborative Effort, Leadership to Help Fellow Students in Need

     WATERTOWN — Connor Brown, a rising senior at Watertown High School, is the first recipient of the Northern New York Community Foundation Heroes of Democracy Award.

     Connor was recognized for his leadership and problem-solving skills while organizing efforts to bring a hygiene vending machine to Watertown High School. The innovative initiative aims to address hygiene poverty among students in Jefferson County.

Community Foundation Grant Supports Expansion at Food Bank Distribution Center

$30,000 Award Will Help Increase Capacity, Storage While Eliminating Waste

     WATERTOWN — A $30,000 Community Foundation grant is helping the Food Bank of Central New York expand its Interstate Island Road distribution center to more effectively help neighbors in need across the North Country and its 11-county service area.

     In Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties, the Food Bank partners with 70 different food pantries, soup kitchens, backpack programs and other organizations to provide nutritious foods below cost. In turn, those organizations serve hundreds of North Country families, providing emergency food assistance to residents who couldn’t otherwise access nutritious foods.

     The Community Foundation provides grant support annually to organizations that operate in partnership with the Food Bank.

Thanks to donors like YOU, the LEAD Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation made the holiday season shine a little brighter for tri-county seniors!

Through LEAD's Holiday Giving Fund match, nearly $5,500 was raised to help make the holidays special for seniors in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

Meals on Wheels at Watertown Urban Mission, the Santa for Seniors program at Lowville Food Pantry, and Meals on Wheels at St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging each received $1,832 in support.

The Watertown-based manufacturer behind Little Trees air fresheners recently established the CAR-FRESHNER Corporation Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation.

Grant applications will be reviewed and awarded quarterly throughout the calendar year. Eligible nonprofit organizations may submit one application per year, with grant awards ranging from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $20,000 per application.

This year, applications must focus on educational initiatives, including but not limited to libraries, child care, and preschool programs, career training, vocational and technical education, and similar projects that enhance educational opportunities within Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

The deadline for first-quarter 2025 grant applications is Friday, January 24, 2025. Visit bit.ly/grant-portal to access the Community Foundation’s online grant portal.
