Community Foundation’s LEAD Council Announces Winners of Third ‘Canstruction’ Competition

More than 6,000 Food and Hygiene Items Collected will Help Reduce Food Insecurity

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation’s LEAD Council is pleased to announce the winners of its third “Canstruction for Northern New York” contest to help reduce food insecurity across the region.

     Nine teams combined to collect more than 6,000 canned goods and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products that will help restock school-based backpack programs and community food pantries in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. Additionally, the winning teams will share $1,500 in grant awards to present to two different school-based backpack programs that participants selected.

Dr. D. Susan Badenhausen Legacy Fund Supports Projects at 11 St. Lawrence County Organizations

More than $52,000 in Grant Funding Will Strengthen Quality of Life for Residents Across the County

     WATERTOWN — Eleven St. Lawrence County nonprofit organizations will share $52,287 in grant funding from the Dr. D. Susan Badenhausen Legacy Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation to strengthen the quality of life for all residents across the county.

     The Dr. D. Susan Badenhausen Legacy Fund was established through a bequest from Dr. Badenhausen, a St. Lawrence County resident and retired physician who passed away in 2018 at age 83. Dr. Badenhausen believed in the strength of community and was a passionate advocate for the people and places in the region she loved and called home. This charitable fund forever continues her legacy of caring for others while thoughtfully perpetuating her interests and passions in responsible ways with a geographic-specific focus on improving the quality of life in St. Lawrence County.

Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council Now Accepting Student Applications

Rising Sophomores, Juniors from All Jefferson County Schools Welcome to Apply

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation is now accepting applications for service on its Youth Philanthropy Council from all Jefferson County rising sophomores and juniors.

     This is the first year the Foundation will welcome applications from students attending any of the county’s 13 public and private schools, as well as home-schooled students, provided they reside in a Jefferson County school district.

Sawyer Community Fund Grant Helps Strengthen Safety for Western Town Library Patrons

Nearly $2,300 in Funding Will Purchase Automatic External Defibrillator

     WESTERNVILLE — A $2,226 grant from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help strengthen safety for patrons at the Western Town Library.

     Grant support will be used to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED) to give the library critical safety support in case of emergencies during operating hours or community events.

     The Western Town Library serves approximately 3,000 patrons annually and offers a wide variety of circulation materials and unique programming for all ages.

Foundation’s Rock Charitable Fund Supports Projects at Eleven St. Lawrence County Organizations

$148,460 Awarded in Fifth Competitive Round to Strengthen Quality of Life

     WATERTOWN — Eleven nonprofit organizations serving St. Lawrence County residents will share $148,460 in grant funding from the Rock Charitable Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation to preserve local history and maintain churches and cemeteries in the region.

     The legacy fund was established at the Community Foundation in 2019 through a bequest from St. Lawrence County resident and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Marjorie J. Rock, who passed away in February 2017 at age 96. Thanks to her thoughtful generosity and foresight, Ms. Rock’s desire to support St. Lawrence County will be perpetuated for generations to come.
