Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge Awards $10,000 in Grants to Charitable Organizations

Now in Third Year, Initiative Sees More Than 100 Entries From North Country Middle School Students

    WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation announces $10,000 in Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge grants to 20 nonprofit organizations that serve Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

    Now in its third year, the Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge includes schools in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. This year’s program committee received and reviewed 104 entries from seventh- and eighth-graders who recommended grants to 66 different organizations that serve residents in the three counties.

Community Foundation Provides $25,000 Matching Grant to Strengthen Canton Community Fund

    CANTON — The Northern New York Community Foundation has provided a $25,000 matching grant to the Canton Community Fund to support its Campaign for Canton and build its permanent endowment within the Community Foundation.

    A portion of this grant was made possible by the Brookmar Fund, also a Community Foundation component fund. The Brookmar Fund’s advisors are Peter and Kathy Wyckoff of Canton.

    The Canton Community Fund began its 20th year in September as an affiliate of the Northern New York Community Foundation. It was the first geographic-specific fund within the Community Foundation, created to broadly strengthen quality of life in a specific community and provide donors with a designated option.

Rock Charitable Fund Established; Community Foundation Legacy Will Forever Support St. Lawrence County

First Grant Awarded to Heuvelton Historical Association to Support Pickens Hall

    WATERTOWN — The Rock Charitable Fund, a component fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation, has been established through a bequest from St. Lawrence County resident and retired Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Army Marjorie J. Rock, who passed away in February 2017 at the age of 96.

    The fund’s charitable purpose has three focus areas: for the maintenance and preservation of churches and cemeteries in St. Lawrence County; for the preservation and maintenance of places of legitimate historical significance in the county; and to benefit and/or assist veterans of the United States military who reside in St. Lawrence County.

United Way of Northern New York, Community Foundation Announce Partnership for North Country Center of Nonprofit Excellence

    WATERTOWN — United Way of Northern New York and the Northern New York Community Foundation are pleased to announce a collaborative partnership to provide critical education and training to community organizations in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties. The UWNNY’s North Country Center of Nonprofit Excellence will offer professional development workshops and skill training symposiums, which gives participants the knowledge and tools to increase organizational performance and agility.

    “The United Way is thrilled to partner with the Community Foundation,” said Jamie Cox, United Way of Northern New York chief executive officer. “By working together, we are going to have the ability to provide best-in-class training, which will result in nonprofit organizations throughout the North Country having more effective programs and increased financial efficiency. Youth Philanthropy Council Extends Deadline for Funding Proposals

Grant Requests Due Friday, Feb. 28 for 2020 Decision; Up to $20,000 Available

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Council haws extended its deadline for grant requests from nonprofit organizations of all types for projects, programs or initiatives that positively impact the quality of life in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. The council will evaluate each proposal and has up to $20,000 in grant funding to award.

     For award consideration, completed grant applications must be received at the Northern New York Community Foundation, 131 Washington St., Watertown, N.Y. 13601, no later than Friday, Feb. 28, 2020. Council members will notify finalists selected to present proposals in the spring. The council will recommend grants for funding to the Community Foundation’s board of directors, which will review recommendations during its quarterly meeting in June 2020. Last year, the Youth Philanthropy Council awarded 10 grants totaling $20,600 in support to nonprofit organizations that serve residents of the tri-county region.

Together with the Italian-American Civic Association, we are pleased to announce the 2026 recipients of the William I. Graf Award. 

Watertown High School seniors Marra Dickinson was selected as the women’s recipient, and Maddox J. Corey was named as the men’s honoree this year.

We are honored to help the Graf family and the Italian-American Civic Association steward this highly cherished and storied legacy award. We look forward to seeing these three talented student athletes continue their journeys on and off the athletic field as they advance to undergraduate studies this fall.

Thank you to Stewarts Shops for the generous gift. Stewart’s Washington Street store manager Megan Abbott recently invited us to her store for a grant presentation.

The gift is from the Stewart’s Holiday Match program, an annual initiative from Thanksgiving to Christmas when Stewart’s Shops matches customer donations, dollar-for-dollar, to support local children and youth nonprofit initiatives.

The program raised more than $1.8 million in 2025 to help fund nonprofit organizations, schools, and churches in their service areas. We are grateful to be a recipient of a Holiday Match grant.
