Grant Opportunity to Support Local Fire Safety Education and Training Launched

October 1, 2025 By admin

Up to $10,000 Available from the Garrett W. Loomis Firefighters Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation

WATERTOWN — A funding opportunity to support fire safety education and training across Northern New York is now available to fire departments serving Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

The Garrett W. Loomis Firefighters Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will award up to $10,000 this fall to enhance fire education and training across the region. This opportunity is presented in collaboration with the Garrett W. Loomis Foundation.

The goal of this grant program is to assist area fire departments with funding to augment fire education and training that helps their organization prepare, grow and protect the communities they serve.

Examples of funding requests may include, but are not limited to:

  • Continuing education through workshops or seminars
  • Fire training equipment and technology
  • On-site resources (training props or educational materials)
  • Improvements to regional fire training centers
  • Guest speakers for trainings

Local fire departments are encouraged to apply online at bit.ly/grant-portal. Collaboration with other fire departments on a grant application is encouraged.

The deadline to apply is Friday, November 14. Please direct questions about this grant opportunity to Max DelSignore, Community Foundation vice president, at max@nnycf.org.

Garrett W. Loomis

The Garrett W. Loomis Firefighters Fund was established at the Community Foundation to provide charitable support for fire education, safety and training across the region. The fund was established to honor Mr. Loomis, a Sackets Harbor native, who was killed in the line of duty battling a local silo fire in 2010.

Garrett’s firefighters fund supports an annual fire safety seminar presented locally and featuring national, high-level expertise from career firefighters. The fund has also directed grants to area fire training centers for a variety of emerging training needs.

This grant opportunity is made possible through support from gifts made to the Garrett W. Loomis Firefighters Fund at the Community Foundation, as well as individual contributions and community activities of the Garrett W. Loomis Foundation.

Also, leadership supporters of the Garrett W. Loomis Foundation include: Watertown Savings Bank, Reed & Benoit and Carpenter Stoodley, Inc. Funeral Homes, North Harbor Dairy, Knowlton Technologies, Fuccillo Automotive Group, Karen Peebles and Berkshire Hathaway Home Services CNY Realty, BridgeView Real Estate, the Lawman Group, R. Martins Contracting, and Thomas Trash Service.
