Canstruction for Northern New York 2026

What is Canstruction for Northern new York?

Canstruction for Northern New York is a group leadership activity to encourage students to team up and construct a fun, themed structure of donated canned food and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products to support a local food pantry or backpack program of your choice!

The Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council invited K-12 and college students and organized student groups in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties to participate in a creative and impactful project to help reduce food insecurity across the North Country.

Why is Canstruction important?

  • It supports local residents with essential needs.
  • It instills philanthropic values in students who want to give back.
  • It builds school spirit around a difference-making project.
  • Students compete to win grant awards for another nonprofit they care about.

Each winning team will then distribute its $500 grant award to a local nonprofit organization — federally classified 501(c)3 — serving Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

Please DO NOT deconstruct your project until this step has been completed. After the presentation photo, your teams may transport donated goods to their designated food pantry or backpack program.

Congratulations to the winners of our Youth Philanthropy Council's fourth “Canstruction for Northern New York” competition to help reduce food insecurity across the tri-county region.

Carthage Middle School’s Builders Club & Student Government students are the winners of the “People’s Choice Award” and the “Top Collection Award,” and Watertown High School’s Student Council students took home the “Best Design Award.”

Other teams participating in this year’s competition include: Beaver River Central School’s 9th grade Earth science class with “Pack It Up;” First Presbyterian Church of Watertown, N.Y. Sunday School Class and Youth Group with “Food Steeple;” and South Jefferson High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter with “Be the Light in Someone’s Storm.”

The five participating teams combined to collect more than 3,300 canned goods and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products that will help restock school-based backpack programs and community food pantries in Jefferson and Lewis counties. Additionally, the winning teams will share $1,500 in grant awards to present to two different local nonprofit organizations that participants selected.
