George R. Davis Fund for Lowville Awards $12,500 in Grant Funding to Support Community

Projects at Three Lowville-Area Organizations Receive Help From Legacy Fund 

     LOWVILLE — Three Lowville-area organizations and projects will share $12,500 in grant support from the George R. Davis Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation. This geographic-specific fund serves as a permanent resource for programs, projects, and initiatives that enhance quality of life in the village and town of Lowville.

     The Honorable George R. Davis lived almost his entire life in Lowville and served for 20 years as Lewis County Judge from 1962 to 1983, previously serving as District Attorney. He was active in civic affairs throughout his life with a particular interest in local history, including the history of Lowville Academy where his father was a supervising principal for more than 35 years. Judge Davis died in 2010.

Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund Announces $58,050 in New Grant Awards

Fourteen Organizations Will Share Support for Broad Range of Projects and Programs to Strengthen Quality of Life

     BOONVILLE — Fourteen community projects and organizations that benefit Boonville, Constableville, and Westernville residents will share $58,050 in funding from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation this year.

     Support will help fund programs and projects that broadly impact the quality of life for residents in the three communities. Nearly two-dozen organizations applied for grant funding in the sixth year of the grant program. In 2022, the Sawyer Community Fund awarded $52,100 to 15 community-based organizations. Thanks to the enduring generosity of the Sawyers, the fund has provided more than $250,000 in support to 75 organizations and projects since grant-making efforts began in 2018.

Community Foundation Grant Helps Massena Museum with Artifact Storage

$5,000 in Support Aids Celine G. Philibert Cultural Centre and Museum

     MASSENA — A recent Community Foundation grant will help the Town of Massena’s efforts to purchase a storage building for the Celine G. Philibert Memorial Cultural Centre and Museum.

     The Foundation’s Board has approved a $5,000 award for the Museum that will help properly protect its collection and artifacts. 

     In early May, Community Foundation staff learned that officials with the Town and Museum were raising money to purchase a container for artifact storage.

Youth Philanthropy Council Awards $20,000 to Seven North Country Nonprofit Organizations

Students Field 27 Funding Requests from Tri-County Nonprofits

     WATERTOWN — The Youth Philanthropy Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation has awarded $20,000 in grants to seven North Country nonprofit organizations that will support a wide range of community programs and projects.

     Each year, the Council reviews requests from tri-county nonprofits to fund projects or initiatives that positively impact the quality of life in Jefferson, Lewis, or St. Lawrence counties. In addition to researching and recommending grants, Council members visit several nonprofit organizations, learn about grantee stewardship, community investment and leadership, and nonprofit sustainability.

Community Foundation Announces New Endowment to Support the Annual Concert in the Park

Donor Partnerships Create Permanent Resource to Supplement Annual Fundraising Efforts

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation is pleased to announce a partnership with the family of T. Urling and Mabel Walker and local developer Jake Johnson to create a permanent resource that will help support the annual Concert in the Park event. The fund will provide a gift toward annual fundraising efforts led by the Watertown Noon Rotary Club.

     Mr. Johnson, of Jake Johnson Properties, Watertown, the Walker Family Community Fund of the Community Foundation and the Community Foundation itself provided leadership gifts to establish a Concert in the Park endowment fund at the Community Foundation. Watertown Savings Bank and the Mart Liinve Family Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation have provided additional support to build the fund. Together, the donors have provided an initial $85,000 toward the $100,000 goal.

Working with donors to benefit the community through grants and scholarships since 1929.

Congratulations to the winners of our Youth Philanthropy Council's fourth “Canstruction for Northern New York” competition to help reduce food insecurity across the tri-county region.

Carthage Middle School’s Builders Club & Student Government students are the winners of the “People’s Choice Award” and the “Top Collection Award,” and Watertown High School’s Student Council students took home the “Best Design Award.”

Other teams participating in this year’s competition include: Beaver River Central School’s 9th grade Earth science class with “Pack It Up;” First Presbyterian Church of Watertown, N.Y. Sunday School Class and Youth Group with “Food Steeple;” and South Jefferson High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter with “Be the Light in Someone’s Storm.”

The five participating teams combined to collect more than 3,300 canned goods and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products that will help restock school-based backpack programs and community food pantries in Jefferson and Lewis counties. Additionally, the winning teams will share $1,500 in grant awards to present to two different local nonprofit organizations that participants selected.
