George C. Boldt Scholarship Recipients Honored

Boldt Great-Grandson Continues Support of Jefferson County Students for Two Years of Study

     CLAYTON — Two Jefferson County high school members of the class of 2022 were recently honored as recipients of the Northern New York Community Foundation George C. Boldt Scholarship.

     Elizabeth A. M. Hellings, Indian River High School, and Cody M. Wade, also Indian River High School, were each awarded a two-year $10,000 scholarship during a reception in Clayton with George C. Boldt’s great-grandson, Malcolm Goodridge, and great-great-grandson, Charlie Goodridge. 

     The scholarship honors the legacy of the castle’s builder, noted hotelier and philanthropist George C. Boldt Sr. Mr. Goodridge has led efforts to establish the scholarship with other descendants of Mr. Boldt and dozens of North Country donors who have made gifts to the scholarship fund at the Community Foundation.

Daughters Award First Family Scholarship Honoring Parents’ Legacies of Community Leadership

     WATERTOWN — A 2022 Belleville-Henderson High School graduate has been named the first recipient of the newly established Northern New York Community Foundation Barbara D. and Robert J. Hanrahan Family Scholarship.

     Laura L. Zehr graduated at the top of her class in June, earning an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors and the Seal of Biliteracy. She will attend Nazareth College, Rochester, to study adolescent French education and plans to pursue a career as a French teacher.

     She was a National Honor Society member and competed on the varsity swimming team. Laura was a four-time Frontier League All Star and four-time Scholar Athlete. A euphonium player, she also earned extensive honors as a musician. She is the daughter of Nicole and Mark Zehr, Belleville.

Community Foundation’s Dr. D. Susan Badenhausen Legacy Fund Offers up to $50,000 in Grant Support

Charitable Organizations Serving St. Lawrence County Invited to Apply by October 21

     WATERTOWN — The Dr. D. Susan Badenhausen Legacy Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications for 2022 funding from charitable organizations whose work improves the quality of life in St. Lawrence County.

     Grant funding is available to nonprofit organizations that serve St. Lawrence County and whose efforts align with one or more of the following focus areas: arts and culture; conservation and wildlife preservation; educational programs; and general health and well-being.

     The fund benefits causes and organizations that Dr. Badenhausen treasured and valued most and serves as an enduring embodiment of her interests and passions while providing annual grants to organizations that support the same.

Community Foundation Offers $10,000 Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge Opportunity

Tri-County 7th and 8th Graders Could Win One of Ten $1,000 Grants to Support a Favorite Charity

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation’s 2022-2023 Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge is now open to students. The challenge seeks to engage seventh and eighth graders in learning about their communities while they compete for an opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local nonprofit organization of their choice.

     This is the sixth year of the program, which is made possible by donors to the Community Foundation’s Friends of the Foundation Annual Community Betterment Fund, corporate support from Community Bank and a major gift from an individual donor. This year, grant awards are double previous years with 10 winners selected, which means entries will be competitively judged and should be well-written and articulate a compelling case for support.

Community Foundation’s LEAD Advisory Council Offers Grant Support to Tri-County Nonprofits

Up to $20,000 in Funding Available Through the LEAD Impact Grant Program

     WATERTOWN — Nonprofit organizations serving Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties are invited to apply for up to $20,000 in funding through the LEAD Impact Grant Program, an initiative of the Northern New York Community Foundation’s LEAD Council.

     The LEAD Council is an advisory committee of young professionals empowered to make key investments in the tri-county region through community grants and volunteerism. The Council wants to learn more about the current work of nonprofits and is accepting proposals for Impact Grant Program funding through Friday, September 30, 2022.

In Jefferson County, Faith Fellowship Christian School held its lead with 100 percent student participation! Sackets Harbor Central remains a strong second with 50 percent participation and four additional schools — Belleville Henderson Central, Immaculate Heart Central, LaFargeville Central, and Alexandria Central each passed 25 percent student participation.

In Lewis County, Copenhagen Central held the lead while RVMS and South Lewis Central remain above 25 percent student participation. In St. Lawrence County, Colton-Pierrepont Central held onto its lead with 26.92 percent student participation.
