Community Foundation’s LEAD Council Announces Winners of Second ‘Canstruction’ Competition

Nearly 5,300 Food and Hygiene Items Collected will Help Reduce Food Insecurity Across Tri-County Region

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation’s LEAD Council is pleased to announce the winners of its second “Canstruction for Northern New York” contest to help reduce food insecurity across the North Country.

     Eight teams combined to collect more than 5,200 canned goods and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products that will help restock school-based backpack programs and community food pantries in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. Additionally, the winning teams will share $1,500 in grant awards to present to two different school-based backpack programs that participants selected.

     With nearly 1,000 votes cast, Indian River Central School’s entry is the “People’s Choice Award” winner for its sculpture titled “Diversity.” The class also won the “Top Collection Award” with more than 2,600 canned goods and other nonperishable items collected.

Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council Aids Tri-County Nonprofits with Mission-Based Work

Five Local Organizations Will Share $5,000 in Funding to Strengthen Efforts

     WATERTOWN — Five North Country nonprofit organizations will share $5,000 in grant support to strengthen their missions and work thanks to recent awards from the Youth Philanthropy Council of the  Northern New York Community Foundation.

     The Council and its executive committee selected the five organizations based on each nonprofit’s mission, success in achieving goals, demonstration of fiscal responsibility, sustainability, and formal presentation. Each of the following tri-county organizations were awarded a $1,000 grant to help with a wide range of community programs and projects:

Thousand Islands Bridge Authority Scholarship is Now Open to U.S., Canadian Students

Support Available for Those with Family Ties to International Organization

     WATERTOWN — Students with family ties to the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority should apply by Saturday, June 1, for the Northern New York Community Foundation Russell I. Wilcox Thousand Islands Bridge Authority Scholarship.

     Current full-time Thousand Islands Bridge Authority employees, retirees, and their children and grandchildren are eligible to apply for the scholarship, which is open to U.S. and Canadian residents who can articulate a family tie to the Bridge Authority.

Russell I. Wilcox Family Fund Supports Local Paramedic Education

$2,000 Grant Helps Philadelphia Native on Path to Become State Certified Paramedic

     PHILADELPHIA — A $2,000 grant from the Russell I. Wilcox Family Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation is helping Indian River Ambulance Service Paramedic Trainee Kollin Hardy continue his studies at Clarkson University to become a New York State-certified paramedic.

     A Philadelphia native, Kollin graduated from Indian River High School and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from SUNY Potsdam.

Community Foundation Awards $10,000 Grant to Help Massena Salvation Army Expand Kitchen

Victory Road Facility Plans to Add Food Services to Aid More Food Insecure Families

     MASSENA — A $10,000 Northern New York Community Foundation grant will help the Salvation Army of Massena complete a new commercial kitchen at its Victory Road facility to alleviate food insecurity in the greater Massena area.

     The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors approved the grant award during its March 26 meeting.

In Jefferson County, Faith Fellowship Christian School held its lead with 100 percent student participation! Sackets Harbor Central remains a strong second with 50 percent participation and four additional schools — Belleville Henderson Central, Immaculate Heart Central, LaFargeville Central, and Alexandria Central each passed 25 percent student participation.

In Lewis County, Copenhagen Central held the lead while RVMS and South Lewis Central remain above 25 percent student participation. In St. Lawrence County, Colton-Pierrepont Central held onto its lead with 26.92 percent student participation.
