Youth Philanthropy Council Seeks 2023 Grant Funding Proposals

Up to $20,000 Available to Support Tri-County Nonprofit Organizations

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council welcomes grant requests from nonprofit organizations of all types for programs, projects, or initiatives that strengthen the quality of life in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. The council will evaluate each proposal for up to $20,000 in available grant funding.

     For consideration, completed grant applications must be submitted no later than Friday, Jan. 27, 2023. Council members will notify finalists selected to present proposals. The Council will recommend grants for funding to the Community Foundation’s board of directors. This past round, the Youth Philanthropy Council awarded five grants totaling $20,000 in support to nonprofit organizations that serve tri-county residents.

Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge Awards $10,000 in Grant Support to 10 Northern New York Nonprofits

Nearly 125 Middle School Students in Three Counties Participate in Sixth Annual Challenge

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation is pleased to announce $10,000 in Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge grants to 10 nonprofit organizations that serve Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

     Now in its sixth year, the Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge was open to all tri-county middle school students. This year’s program committee reviewed 124 entries from seventh and eighth graders in 11 different school districts who recommended grants to 93 different organizations that serve residents across the three counties.

LEAD Council Holiday Giving Fund Awards $6,000 to Brighten Season

Young Professionals Aid Community Initiatives in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation’s LEAD Council will award $6,000 to three programs that make the holidays special for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence County residents through its Holiday Giving Fund.

     The advisory committee of young professionals established the LEAD Holiday Giving Fund at the Community Foundation in 2020 to help brighten the season for tri-county residents in need. Between generous gifts to the fund and a matching commitment from the Community Foundation, three nonprofits that manage holiday programs will each receive $2,000 support to strengthen their efforts. Community Foundation Now Accepting 2023-24 Scholarship Applications

Diverse, Extensive Opportunities for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence County Students

     WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications from students in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties who plan to enroll in post-secondary educational programs in the fall of 2023.

     An online application streamlines the process for most scholarships. Students may access the portal, create a user account, and begin an online application by clicking on “2023-2024 Scholarship Application” found at the top of nnycf.org/scholarships/scholarship-overview. With few exceptions, all Community Foundation scholarship applications are due Wednesday, March 15, through the online portal. Scholarships with different deadlines — some after March 15 — are noted on the same web page. Applications cannot be accepted after the published deadline.

Foundation LEAD Council Launches Annual Holiday Initiative

$5,000 Matching Challenge to Double Gifts to LEAD Holiday Giving Fund

     WATERTOWN — The LEAD Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation is working to help bring joy to vulnerable children and families in need this holiday season.

     The advisory committee of young professionals is kicking off its annual LEAD Holiday Giving initiative to support the tri-county region. To begin, the Council’s LEAD Holiday Giving Fund at the Community Foundation will provide a $5,000 matching challenge. Each gift to the LEAD Holiday Giving Fund will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000.

Congratulations to Watertown High School’s Forensic Science classes! The course instructors are recipients of the first grant award from the Deacon Bruce W. Daugherty Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation. 

Deacon Daugherty’s family established the fund to honor his life and legacy after he passed away on St. Patrick’s Day last year.

Watertown’s Forensic Science class provides students with an engaging, hands-on introduction to the methods and critical thinking used in real-world criminal investigations. 

The $1,492 grant funding was used to purchase corkboards for students to create “murder boards” for their final investigative project. The boards serve as visual displays of evidence, timelines, suspects, and forensic analyses, mirroring the work of actual crime scene investigators. Funding enhance instruction for 75 students in grades 11 and 12.

“Having tangible boards to display their findings makes the learning experience more authentic and helps students better understand how evidence connects to build a case,” Forensic Science Instructor Samantha Mrs. Freeman wrote in the grant application.
