$11,500 Funding Partnership Provides Needed Winter Clothing for Students

‘Operation Snowstorm’ Helps Children in Two Lewis County School Districts

    WATERTOWN — A Northern New York Community Foundation partnership that helps provide warm winter clothing to children in two Lewis County schools will continue to make a big difference for another three years.

    The collaboration with the Dyson Foundation called “Operation Snowstorm” supplies Lowville Academy and Beaver River students with coats, hats, scarves, mittens, boots, and other necessary winter garments. This fall, and in 2022 and 2023, the two schools will evenly share a grant of $11,500 to support Lewis County youth and families.

    Thanks to a long-standing relationship with the Dyson Foundation, the Community Foundation will help facilitate a meaningful holiday initiative to benefit students in the two school districts.

Sawyer Community Fund Grant Enhances Technology at Western Town Library

Award Will Enable Expansion of a Wide Range of Community Programs for Children and Adults

    WESTERNVILLE — A recent grant awarded from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help the Western Town Library purchase new technology to enhance programs and services provided at the library.

    An $1,800 grant to the library will help library officials present a variety of programs for children and adults, including essential activities such as telemedicine appointments, workshops, seminars and more where Internet access is needed. The library serves six different communities and patrons of all ages.

Community Foundation, CABVI Launch $10,000 North Country Challenge

Philanthropy Center Welcomes Central Association Team to Serve Local Residents

    WATERTOWN —  The Northern New York Community Foundation and the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) Tuesday announced a $10,000 fundraising challenge to the North Country. 

    Thousands of homes in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties will soon receive information in the mail about how they can help residents with vision loss access vision rehabilitation services with assistance from CABVI. Gifts will stay in our three-county area to help our friends and neighbors who are blind or visually impaired. The Community Foundation will match each gift, dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000, doubling each contribution.

Youth Philanthropy Council Seeks 2022 Grant Funding Proposals

Up to $20,000 Available to Support Tri-County Nonprofit Organizations

    WATERTOWN —  The Northern New York Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council welcomes grant requests from nonprofit organizations of all types for programs, projects, or initiatives that strengthen the quality of life in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. The council will evaluate each proposal for up to $20,000 in available grant funding.

    For consideration, completed grant applications must be submitted no later than Friday, Jan. 14, 2022. Council members will notify finalists selected to present proposals. The council will recommend grants for funding to the Community Foundation’s board of directors. This past round, the Youth Philanthropy Council awarded six grants totaling $17,200 in support to nonprofit organizations that serve tri-county residents.

Evergreen STEM Scholarship Recipients Awarded $30,000 for Post-Secondary Studies

Appreciation Dinner Held in Canton Honors Students, Founding Donors

     CANTON —  Ten St. Lawrence County members of the class of 2022 were recently honored as recipients of the Northern New York Community Foundation Evergreen STEM Scholarship. 

     Students are awarded the scholarship due to their interest and intent to study in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field while in college. Students apply while in their junior year of high school and are selected during the summer. Recipients will receive a one-year $3,000 scholarship toward their freshman year of college this fall.

We are excited to share the Week 2 Scholarship Challenge Leaderboard!

In Jefferson County, LaFargeville Central is still in the lead with 30 percent student participation; In Lewis County, South Lewis Central held onto the lead with 22.54 percent student participation; and in St. Lawrence County, Colton-Pierrepont Central took the lead with 23.08 percent student participation.

All schools have a chance to win Community Foundation grant funding by increasing student participation in the scholarship program to at least 25 percent of the senior class. 

The first round of grants will be determined in a Facebook Live event on Monday, February 23! That means schools have two more weeks to increase student participation to be eligible for the first round of Scholarship Challenge grants.
