LEAD Council’s Holiday Giving Fund Awards $6,000 to Brighten Season

Young Professionals Build Charitable Support for Community Initiatives in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties

WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation’s LEAD Council will award $6,000 to three programs that make the holidays special for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence County residents through its Holiday Giving Fund.

The advisory committee of young professionals established the LEAD Holiday Giving Fund at the Community Foundation in 2020 to help brighten the season for tri-county residents in need. Between generous gifts to the fund and a matching commitment from the Community Foundation, three nonprofits that manage holiday programs will each receive $2,000 support to strengthen their efforts. Sawyer Community Fund Award Aids Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

Grant Supports Equipment, Materials for Volunteers to Continue Free Initiative for Boonville Residents

    BOONVILLE — Recent support from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help the Village of Boonville continue its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

    A $2,200 grant will enable the purchase of equipment and materials for volunteers to continue the program in collaboration with the village. For several years, the Village of Boonville has offered the VITA program free to residents with basic income-tax filing needs. Certified volunteers offer their time and expertise to help citizens complete the annual filings. Program volunteers completed between 250 and 300 returns last year.

Community Foundation Now Accepting 2022-23 Scholarship Applications

Extensive, Diverse Opportunities for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence County Students

    WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications from students in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties who plan to enroll in post-secondary programs in the fall of 2022.

    An online application streamlines the process for most scholarships. Students may access the portal, create a user account, and begin an online application by clicking on “2022-2023 Scholarship Application” found at the top of nnycf.org/scholarships/scholarship-overview. With few exceptions, all Community Foundation scholarship applications are due Tuesday, March 15, through the online portal. Scholarships with different deadlines — some after March 15 — are noted on the same web page. It is important to note that this deadline is earlier than in past years.

$11,500 Funding Partnership Provides Needed Winter Clothing for Students

‘Operation Snowstorm’ Helps Children in Two Lewis County School Districts

    WATERTOWN — A Northern New York Community Foundation partnership that helps provide warm winter clothing to children in two Lewis County schools will continue to make a big difference for another three years.

    The collaboration with the Dyson Foundation called “Operation Snowstorm” supplies Lowville Academy and Beaver River students with coats, hats, scarves, mittens, boots, and other necessary winter garments. This fall, and in 2022 and 2023, the two schools will evenly share a grant of $11,500 to support Lewis County youth and families.

    Thanks to a long-standing relationship with the Dyson Foundation, the Community Foundation will help facilitate a meaningful holiday initiative to benefit students in the two school districts.

Sawyer Community Fund Grant Enhances Technology at Western Town Library

Award Will Enable Expansion of a Wide Range of Community Programs for Children and Adults

    WESTERNVILLE — A recent grant awarded from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help the Western Town Library purchase new technology to enhance programs and services provided at the library.

    An $1,800 grant to the library will help library officials present a variety of programs for children and adults, including essential activities such as telemedicine appointments, workshops, seminars and more where Internet access is needed. The library serves six different communities and patrons of all ages.

We are excited to share the Week 4 Scholarship Challenge Leaderboard!

In Jefferson County, Faith Fellowship Christian School took the lead with 100 percent student participation! Sackets Harbor Central is holding strong in second place with 50 percent participation; In Lewis County, South Lewis Central strengthened its lead, increasing to 26.76 percent student participation; and in St. Lawrence County, Colton-Pierrepont Central added to its lead with 26.92 percent student participation.

All schools have a chance to win Community Foundation grant funding by increasing student participation in the scholarship program to at least 25 percent of the senior class. 

The first round of grants will be determined in a Facebook Live event on Monday, February 23! So far, only SIX schools meet the threshold for the first round of grants.
