Grant Helps Purchase Industrial Washer to Rid Turnout Gear of Toxic Chemicals
CONSTABLEVILLE — A recent grant awarded from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help the local fire company maintain its turnout gear while maximizing health and safety for its firefighters.
A $1,500 grant to the Constableville Fire Company helped purchase an industrial washing machine to effectively clean turnout gear. According to fire officials, advanced cleaning from an industrial unit helps to remove toxic chemicals and cancer-causing carcinogens that are known to contaminate turnout gear during fires. Properly cleaning the gear will minimize health risks for firefighters and extend the life of the gear.
