Clifton-Fine Community Fund Welcomes Grant Proposals for 2020 Awards

Applications for Up to $6,000 in Available Funding Due Tuesday, Aug. 25

    WATERTOWN — Nonprofit organizations that serve residents of the Clifton-Fine region in St. Lawrence County may now apply for 2020 grant funding from the Clifton-Fine Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation.

    The fund supports projects, activities, and initiatives that enhance the quality of life for residents of Cranberry Lake, Fine, Oswegatchie, Star Lake, Newton Falls and Wanakena. Grant applications must be received or postmarked no later than Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020. Nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organizations are eligible and encouraged to apply.

    Successful projects or programs should advance community programs, projects and initiatives that will have yearlong, meaningful impact across the region.

George C. Boldt Scholarship Recipients Honored

Boldt Great-Grandson Offers Additional $50,000 Matching Gift to Extend Effort and Help Perpetuate Awards

   CLAYTON — Three Jefferson County high school graduates of the class of 2020 were recently named recipients of the Northern New York Community Foundation George C. Boldt Scholarship.

   Thousand Islands High School student Ashley St. Croix and Alexandria Central High School students Mya Weaver and Makayla Witt were each awarded $5,000 scholarships during a reception in Clayton last week with George C. Boldt’s great-grandson, Malcolm Goodridge.

   The scholarship honors the legacy of the castle’s builder, noted hotelier and philanthropist George C. Boldt Sr. Mr. Goodridge has led efforts to establish the scholarship with other descendants of Mr. Boldt and dozens of North Country donors who have made gifts to the scholarship fund at the Community Foundation.

Youth Philanthropy Council Announces Funding for Eight North Country Nonprofits

$19,530 Awarded as Number of Requests for Support Sets New Record

    WATERTOWN — The Youth Philanthropy Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation recently awarded $19,530 in grants to eight North Country nonprofit organizations that will support a wide range of community programs and projects.

    Each year, the Council reviews requests from tri-county agencies to fund projects or initiatives that positively impact the quality of life in Jefferson, Lewis or St. Lawrence counties. In addition to researching and recommending grants, Council members visit several nonprofit organizations, learn about grantee stewardship, community investment and leadership, and nonprofit sustainability.

Gouverneur’s St. James School Receives $25,000 Gift Through Community Foundation

    GOUVERNEUR — A $25,000 gift to St. James School will help support its continued operation in Gouverneur thanks to a generous donor.

    The funding was provided through the St. James School Foundation Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

    “It is an honor for us to work with donors to direct their giving in ways that have deep meaning for them,” said Rande Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. “This incredibly generous gift represents a great desire to see St. James School continue to be a strong and sustainable educational community resource.

North Side Legacy Fund Awards Inaugural Scholarships, Grants

Eight local students and four Watertown-area organizations receive support for education, community

    WATERTOWN — The North Side Legacy Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation recently presented its inaugural scholarships to eight graduating seniors and grants to four local organizations, totaling $6,000 in support for education and nonprofits.

    The North Side Legacy Fund was established in 2019 as a permanent fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation to forever honor and perpetuate the history and heritage of the North Side Improvement League.

    The North Side Legacy Fund Advisory Committee announced earlier this year the creation of the North Side Legacy Fund Scholarship with plans to provide $4,000 in support to members of the class of 2020. Graduating high school seniors who live in the City of Watertown were eligible. Students from other areas who have family ties to the League were also encouraged to apply. Grant support to local organizations totaled $2,000.

Congratulations to Daphne J. Cronk, the 2026 recipient of the Northern New York Community Foundation Kenneth J. Eysaman II Legacy Scholarship.

Daphne is a top-ranked honor student who graduated from South Jefferson High School last month with an Advanced Regents Diploma with honors. She will attend St. Lawrence University this fall where she plans to major in English. Daphne aspires to become a high school teacher.

She is the daughter of Melissa Fregoe-Cronk and Anthony Cronk, Adams.

The Kenneth J. Eysaman II Legacy Scholarship was established at the Community Foundation in 2020 by Gretchen Eysaman to honor the life and legacy of her husband, Kenneth, who spent nearly 33 years in public education, serving as a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent. From 1979 until his retirement in 1990, Mr. Eysaman was superintendent of schools at South Jefferson Central. He passed away in 2010. 

The scholarship is presented annually to a South Jefferson High School graduate who plan to pursue a career in education or other related fields.

Congratulations to Roman L. Peebles, the Class of 2026 recipient of the Northern New York Community Foundation Chef Dennis J. Laemmermann Culinary Arts Scholarship. 

Roman graduated in June from Sackets Harbor Central School. He also completed the culinary arts program at Jeff-Lewis BOCES. Roman will begin his freshman year at The Culinary Institute of America this fall where he will study culinary arts. 

He aspires to work at a Michelin Star restaurant in Chicago, New York City, or Washington, D.C., and hopes to teach in a culinary arts program after gaining restaurant experience. Roman is the son of Sunshine and Jeremy Peebles, Adams.

Dennis J. Laemmermann was involved in the North Country’s food services industry for most of his life. He was a talented culinary artist whose love for good food was made even better by sharing his gifts with others.

After his sudden passing in March 2019, friends and family established this scholarship to honor his life in a lasting and meaningful way. We are honored to steward his legacy and look forward to future generations of culinary artists finding inspiration from Dennis and the gifts he shared throughout his lifetime.

The Youth Philanthropy Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation is pleased to announce $25,000 in grant funding for six tri-county nonprofit organizations that will support a diverse range of community programs and initiatives.

Council Chair April Wang, a second-year member and 2026 Watertown High School graduate, said the Council had many worthy requests for grant funding this year.

“Guided by a commitment to thoughtful stewardship and community impact, the Youth Philanthropy Council has carefully selected grant recipients whose work addresses critical needs and fosters meaningful progress,” Ms. Wang said. “I am beyond proud of the diligence and purpose reflected in the Council’s work this year.”
