Applications Available for Safe Schools Endeavor Funding
The Safe Schools Endeavor, in partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation, announces the availability of applications for funding for the 2018-19 school year. The grant application should be completed by interested individuals and groups and returned to the Northern New York Community Foundation at 131 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601 by Monday, November 5, 2018. Earlier this year, the Community Foundation offered a $20,000 matching grant for gifts contributed to support the initiative.
“Many generous individuals and businesses have contributed to the Safe Schools Endeavor over the past few months and we are incredibly grateful that their support has brought us to this moment,” said Erika Flint, Steering Committee Chair. “This funding opportunity is the voice of businesses and individuals telling our school districts that they do not have to carry this burden alone. The community views school safety as a shared responsibility that deserves our attention.”
“Our hope was that this matching grant would transform a meaningful idea into reality. The community response to this initiative has more than exceeded our expectations. We are encouraged to now see these resources put to work to help make our students and communities safer,” said Rande Richardson, Community Foundation director. The Safe Schools Endeavor will consider applications submitted by students, teachers, faculty, staff, and parents. Any individual or group of individuals with an idea to improve safety within their Jefferson or Lewis County school building should discuss the concept with their school administration to gather their support. Proposals can involve student programming, parent programming, equipment, faculty and staff training, travel, or anything else that an individual or group within the school community believes would enhance the overall safety of the school and its community members. The Safe Schools Endeavor is about awareness, empowerment, and action within school communities, and funding proposals will be evaluated based upon the degree to which they embody these desired outcomes.
Individuals and groups may request any amount, but typical grants will fall in the range of $1,000 – $2,500. All proposed projects/programs must occur in the 2018-19 school year and must be approved by the administration of the school district. Grant applications are available on the Community Foundation’s website, www.nnycf.org. Additional information is available on the Safe Schools Endeavor Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SafeSchoolsEndeavor/

The Northern New York Community Foundation awards hundreds of scholarships each year. These scholarships are made possible by the philanthropic spirit of groups and individuals throughout Northern New York. Scholarships are popular choices for many as a preferred method of charitable giving and as varied as the individuals and groups that create them. Criteria for many scholarships stewarded by the Foundation are based on geography, major of study, college or university attended, student achievements and much more. Several scholarships may also serve as a tribute to loved ones. Most importantly, each generous scholarship is an investment into the education of local students residing in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
There were nearly $900,000 available for scholarships through the Foundation for the 2018-2019 school year. A complete list of available scholarships and the applications for them may be found at https://www.nnycf.org/scholarships/scholarships-available/.

Over $40,000 in Grants Support Community Programs
The Lyons Falls Free Library received $10,000 in total grant funding from the Northern New York Community Foundation to support capital improvements to the library’s building.
The Foundation approved a $5,000 outright grant to support the capital project, but also agreed to help leverage additional community support by awarding a $5,000 matching grant. The Foundation will match community donations to the library’s project, dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000. Lyons Falls Library is located in the old carriage house of the historic Gould family mansion and is undergoing exterior renovations. The library functions as the village’s community center and is used by a multi-generational population. “Community Foundation donors represent all areas of Northern New York, and it is always especially meaningful when we can help support projects that have great meaning to specific communities,” said Rande Richardson, Community Foundation director.
“The Lyons Falls Library board and the village board are very appreciative of the grant from the Northern New York Community Foundation for our library restoration project,” said Donna Dolhof, Lyons Falls Library board president. “Our library provides numerous important services to our community. Our children’s programming contributes to early childhood literacy and helps instill a love for reading and learning. Computers are in high demand at the library from children and adults. Our adult programs are also popular. All these services would be in jeopardy if we weren’t able to complete our restoration project.”
Other grants recently approved by the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation are:
- The Orchestra of Northern New York (ONNY) – $15,000 to support the organization’s 2018-19 concert series.
- Trinity Concert Series – $5,000 to support their 2018-19 season and assist in expanding the addition of educational components, such as workshops for students, to the program.
- Clayton Jazz Festival – $5,000 to support the expansion of the “Jazz in the Classroom” project to other area schools. The project brings the musicians from “Brighton Beat” into the classrooms, providing assemblies and holding master classes for the kids. This year, the program will expand to more communities, including Carthage, General Brown and Alexandria Central. This grant was made possible, in part, by the Grace L. Reinman Fund, and the River Fund at the Community Foundation.
- Carthage Area Hospital – $3,500 will help provide funding for seven adult and child manikins and the feedback systems to assist with a variety of hospital and community trainings.
- City of Watertown – $3,000 to complete a fall tree planting project in the city. This grant was made possible, in part, by the Carolyn Whitney Fund.
- Northern Choral Society – $1,000 to support the organization’s annual Christmas performance in Watertown.
