George R. Davis Fund for Lowville Now Accepting Grant Proposals for 2023 Funding Support

Up to $15,000 Available for Local Nonprofit Organizations Serving the Town and Village of Lowville

     LOWVILLE — Nonprofit organizations serving residents in the Town and Village of Lowville are encouraged to apply by Friday, April 21, for grant support through the George R. Davis Fund for Lowville of the Northern New York Community Foundation.

     This geographic-specific fund serves as a permanent resource for programs, projects, and initiatives that enhance quality of life in the Town and Village of Lowville.

     The Honorable George R. Davis lived almost his entire life in Lowville. Mr. Davis served for 20 years as Lewis County Judge from 1962 to 1983, previously serving as District Attorney. He was active in civic affairs throughout his life with a particular interest in local history, including the history of Lowville Academy where his father served as supervising principal for more than 35 years. Judge Davis died in 2010.

Community Foundation’s LEAD Council Kicks Off ‘Canstruction’ Competition, Invites Schools to Join

Project Takes Aim at Food Insecurity by Helping to Restock Region’s Food Pantries, Backpack Programs

     WATERTOWN — The LEAD Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation invites local students at tri-county schools and organized student groups in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties to participate in a creative and impactful project to help reduce food insecurity across the North Country.

     “Canstruction for Northern New York” is a group activity to encourage students to team up and construct a fun, themed structure made of donated canned food and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products to support a local food pantry or backpack program of their choice.

Deadline to Apply for 2023-24 Scholarships Fast Approaching

Students Have More Opportunities for Educational Support Than Ever Before

     WATERTOWN — High School seniors in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties have three weeks remaining to apply for Community Foundation scholarships.

     Members of the graduating class of 2023 who plan to enroll in post-secondary programs this fall must complete their applications through the Community Foundation’s online scholarship portal by Wednesday, March 15. The application portal may be accessed at bit.ly/nnycf-scholarships.

Watertown’s Taste of the Town Set for April 22; Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation Seeks Grant Applications

Opportunity for $5,000 in Funding Open to All Tri-County Nonprofit Organizations

     WATERTOWN — Nonprofit organizations that serve residents of Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties are encouraged to apply for the 2023 Watertown Sunrise Rotary Foundation Taste of the Town grant as the one-day community event returns to Jefferson Community College Saturday, April 22.

     The Watertown Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation is a charitable fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation.

     “We are excited to continue this annual spring tradition as a family-friendly, fun event,” said Christian Lopez, Watertown Sunrise Rotary Club president. “We encourage all local nonprofit organizations to apply for our Taste of the Town grant. Watertown Sunrise Rotary is committed to ‘Service Above Self.’ By offering local nonprofit organizations this one-time grant support, Sunrise Rotary creates an enduring and meaningful partnership with them.”

Community Foundation Partnership Provides Needed Warmth for Lewis County Students

‘Operation Snowstorm’ Helps Nearly 150 Children in Two School Districts

     WATERTOWN —  Nearly 150 children in two Lewis County school districts are staying warm this season thanks to a Northern New York Community Foundation partnership that helped provide much-needed winter clothing.

     “Operation Snowstorm,” a collaboration with the Dyson Foundation, outfits students at Lowville Academy and Central School and Beaver River Central School with coats, hats, scarves, mittens, boots, and other necessary winter garments.

     This winter, an $11,500 grant was split evenly between the two schools, which helped to warm 92 Lowville Academy students and 39 Beaver River students.

In Jefferson County, Faith Fellowship Christian School held its lead with 100 percent student participation! Sackets Harbor Central remains a strong second with 50 percent participation and four additional schools — Belleville Henderson Central, Immaculate Heart Central, LaFargeville Central, and Alexandria Central each passed 25 percent student participation.

In Lewis County, Copenhagen Central held the lead while RVMS and South Lewis Central remain above 25 percent student participation. In St. Lawrence County, Colton-Pierrepont Central held onto its lead with 26.92 percent student participation.
