Sawyer Community Fund Grant Helps Youths Prepare for Safe Backcountry Excursions

Grant Helps Boonville Search & Rescue Hold Wilderness Training 

     BOONVILLE — Local youths will be more prepared for wilderness outings equipped with new skills to prevent someone from getting lost in the woods and to provide first aid when needed.

     Thanks to a $1,575 grant from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation, the Boonville Search and Rescue Association held its first compass and CPR/wilderness/first aid training with participants under the age of 13 this summer. 

     This is the first time Boonville Search and Rescue offered training to help the community and youth better prepare for an accident in the backcountry. Grant funding supported purchase of training kits for the first course and future sessions.

Sawyer Community Fund Grant Helps Historic Constable Hall Enhance Visitor Experience

Recent Grant Award Helps Acquire New All-Weather Outdoor Benches

     CONSTABLEVILLE — Visitors to the village’s historic Constable Hall will enjoy the sprawling grounds even more thanks to the installation of nine new all-weather benches.

     A $4,800 grant from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation helped the Constable Hall Association purchase the benches to enhance the overall visitor experience.

     Many improvements have been made to the grounds at Constable Hall. One of the association’s unique features is its historical gardens and a walking trail.

Clifton-Fine Community Fund Supports Three New Projects in Southeastern St. Lawrence County

Local Organizations Will Share $6,000 to Help Strengthen Work

     FINE — The Clifton-Fine Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will support three community projects with $6,000 in grant funding for initiatives and programs that benefit residents of six southeast St. Lawrence County communities.

     The Clifton-Fine Community Fund was established at the Community Foundation in 2013 as a geographic-specific fund to support projects and programs that positively impact the quality of life in the southeast St. Lawrence County region, specifically in the towns and hamlets of Fine, Oswegatchie, Star Lake, Newton Falls, Wanakena and Cranberry Lake. The fund aims to enhance the quality of life for all who live in the region while maximizing the opportunity for residents to give where they live.

VanNess Family Fund Supports Five Potsdam-Area Nonprofit Organizations

Grant Awards Totaling $13,500 Assist Efforts to Strengthen Arts, Culture, and Wellness in St. Lawrence County Community

    POTSDAM — Five nonprofit organizations serving residents of the greater Potsdam area will share more than $13,000 in grant support thanks to the generosity of the late John S. and Dorotha T. VanNess who continue to strengthen the community they selflessly served in their lifetimes.

     Through a series of new grant awards that impact the Potsdam area, John and Dorotha’s commitment to the community endures. The John and Dorotha VanNess Family Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation recently approved $13,500 in support for five nonprofits that deliver arts, culture, history, and wellness-based programs.

Sawyer Community Fund Enables Boonville Cemetery Work

Support Will Help Acquire Tools to Repair and Restore Tombstones

     BOONVILLE — Restoration of several decades-old gravestones in the Boonville Cemetery will move forward thanks to support from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation.

     A $7,000 grant will enable cemetery trustees to purchase a tombstone jack to accomplish this meaningful restoration work and repair several broken, fallen, and tipped headstones.

     With the first burials in the late 1850s, Boonville Cemetery is one of the oldest in the area and it has become a priority to fix several gravestones. For the last three years, the association has updated digital records to enhance genealogy and research requests related to the 166-year-old cemetery.

We are excited to share the Week 3 Scholarship Challenge Leaderboard!

In Jefferson County, Sackets Harbor Central took the lead with 50 percent student participation; In Lewis County, South Lewis Central held onto the lead, increasing to 25.35 percent student participation; and in St. Lawrence County, Colton-Pierrepont Central held onto the lead, still with 23.08 percent student participation.

All schools have a chance to win Community Foundation grant funding by increasing student participation in the scholarship program to at least 25 percent of the senior class. 

The first round of grants will be determined in a Facebook Live event on Monday, February 23! That means schools only have one more week to increase student participation to 25 percent or more of the senior class to be eligible for the first round of Scholarship Challenge grants. So far, only THREE schools meet the threshold for the first round of grants!

We are pleased to announce a pair of strategic initiatives to support the longevity and capacity of tri-county nonprofits.

The Northern New York Community Foundation is launching a $250,000 matching commitment to build existing nonprofit endowment funds the Foundation stewards. Ten individual matching grants of $25,000 will be awarded to each participating organization on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Foundation is also introducing the Nonprofit Capacity Building Initiative, a new grant program to help strengthen the effectiveness of local nonprofits.
