Community Foundation Partnership Helps Keep Lewis County Students Safe and Warm in Winter

‘Operation Snowstorm’ Outfits Nearly 140 Children in Two School Districts With Winter Clothing

     WATERTOWN — Nearly 140 children in two Lewis County school districts are staying warm this season thanks to a Northern New York Community Foundation partnership that helped provide much-needed winter clothing.

     “Operation Snowstorm,” a collaboration with the Dyson Foundation, outfits students at Lowville Academy and Central School and Beaver River Central School with coats, hats, scarves, mittens, boots, and other essential winter garments.

     This winter, an $11,500 grant was split evenly between the two schools, which helped to warm 87 Lowville Academy students and 47 Beaver River students.

Air Products Partners with Community Foundation to Establish a $25,000 Scholarship Fund for the Greater Massena Area

Members of the Class of 2024 who Live in St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties Encouraged to Apply by April 1

     MASSENA — Air Products, in partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation, announced today a $25,000 grant from the Air Products Foundation to support the establishment of the Air Products Greater Massena Scholarship Fund.

     Scholarships of up to $5,000 per applicant are available to students who live in St. Lawrence or Franklin counties who are applying for admission in any year of study to a college or university, or vocational, technical, or trade school. Students pursuing all avenues of education, including adult learning, are encouraged to apply for the scholarships, though special consideration will be given to students pursuing STEM education, skilled trade sciences, or expressing a specific interest in environmental conservation or clean energy.

Community Foundation Support Will Help Transform St. Lawrence County’s Clifton-Fine Hospital

$150,000 Grant Funding Strengthens Capital Campaign While Investing in the Future

     STAR LAKE — Community Foundation grant funding totaling $150,000 will help transform the 75-year-old Clifton-Fine Hospital into a more modern, patient-centered facility that will serve rural southeastern St. Lawrence County residents for years to come.

     The Community Foundation recently approved a series of grants for the Wilderness HealthCare Foundation, which is the hospital’s fundraising arm. An initial $50,000 award is directed toward the “Emergency Care Close to Home” campaign, which includes $25,000 from the Paul J. Flynn Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation.

     The Wilderness HealthCare Foundation is presently engaged in a $1 million community fundraising campaign to help secure the remaining support for the $23 million project to construct and equip a new emergency services wing.

Foundation’s LEAD Council Launches Second ‘Canstruction’ Competition, Invites Schools, Local Student Groups to Participate

Project Aims to Combat Food Insecurity, Restock Local Food Pantries, Backpack Programs

     WATERTOWN — The LEAD Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation invites local students at tri-county schools and organized student groups in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties to participate in an impactful and creative project to help reduce food insecurity across the North Country.

     The “Canstruction for Northern New York” initiative is back for a second year as a group activity to encourage students to team up and construct a fun, themed structure made of donated canned food and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products to support a local food pantry or backpack program of their choice.

Safe Schools Endeavor Awards Nearly $24,000 to Improve Campus Safety in Jefferson, Lewis Counties

Thirteen Projects Receive Funding to Strengthen Student Culture, Building Security

     WATERTOWN — The Safe Schools Endeavor, in partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation, will award nearly $24,000 in grant support to fund 13 projects in 12 Jefferson and Lewis County schools for the 2023-2024 school year.

     The Safe Schools Endeavor Steering Committee reviewed more than a dozen applications for funding to support programs that empower students, parents, and faculty to create the safest schools possible in Jefferson and Lewis counties. This is the fifth year the fund has awarded grant support. Since its inception, the Safe Schools Endeavor has awarded $103,326 for 56 school projects in Jefferson and Lewis counties.
