Sawyer Community Fund Grant Helps Replace Village Flags

Funding to Purchase Five U.S. Flags for Downtown Boonville’s Little Village Park

    BOONVILLE — A recent grant from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help officials in the Village of Boonville purchase new United States flags that will be flown at Little Village Park in the center of downtown.

    The $1,500 award will help the village acquire five large flags that will be raised and featured on an 80-foot flagpole in the heart of the village.

Sawyer Community Fund Grant Helps Create Safe Pathway

Boonville Residents Will Soon Have Pedestrian Route to Nearby Grocery Store

    BOONVILLE — More than $3,000 in grant support from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help officials in the Village of Boonville continue complete a walking trail that connects the downtown district to a local grocery store.

    A $3,500 grant will help the village create a walking pathway for residents to avoid traffic and safely reach the nearest grocery store. Boonville’s lone downtown grocery store closed in 2019. The Sawyer Community Fund grant assisted with purchase of remaining stone and bridge and decking materials to finish the path.

LEAD Council’s Holiday Giving Fund Awards $6,000 to Brighten Season

Young Professionals Build Charitable Support for Community Initiatives in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties

WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation’s LEAD Council will award $6,000 to three programs that make the holidays special for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence County residents through its Holiday Giving Fund.

The advisory committee of young professionals established the LEAD Holiday Giving Fund at the Community Foundation in 2020 to help brighten the season for tri-county residents in need. Between generous gifts to the fund and a matching commitment from the Community Foundation, three nonprofits that manage holiday programs will each receive $2,000 support to strengthen their efforts. Sawyer Community Fund Award Aids Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

Grant Supports Equipment, Materials for Volunteers to Continue Free Initiative for Boonville Residents

    BOONVILLE — Recent support from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help the Village of Boonville continue its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

    A $2,200 grant will enable the purchase of equipment and materials for volunteers to continue the program in collaboration with the village. For several years, the Village of Boonville has offered the VITA program free to residents with basic income-tax filing needs. Certified volunteers offer their time and expertise to help citizens complete the annual filings. Program volunteers completed between 250 and 300 returns last year.

Community Foundation Now Accepting 2022-23 Scholarship Applications

Extensive, Diverse Opportunities for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence County Students

    WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications from students in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties who plan to enroll in post-secondary programs in the fall of 2022.

    An online application streamlines the process for most scholarships. Students may access the portal, create a user account, and begin an online application by clicking on “2022-2023 Scholarship Application” found at the top of nnycf.org/scholarships/scholarship-overview. With few exceptions, all Community Foundation scholarship applications are due Tuesday, March 15, through the online portal. Scholarships with different deadlines — some after March 15 — are noted on the same web page. It is important to note that this deadline is earlier than in past years.

Thanks to donors like YOU, the LEAD Council of the Northern New York Community Foundation made the holiday season shine a little brighter for tri-county seniors!

Through LEAD's Holiday Giving Fund match, nearly $5,500 was raised to help make the holidays special for seniors in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

Meals on Wheels at Watertown Urban Mission, the Santa for Seniors program at Lowville Food Pantry, and Meals on Wheels at St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging each received $1,832 in support.

The Watertown-based manufacturer behind Little Trees air fresheners recently established the CAR-FRESHNER Corporation Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation.

Grant applications will be reviewed and awarded quarterly throughout the calendar year. Eligible nonprofit organizations may submit one application per year, with grant awards ranging from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $20,000 per application.

This year, applications must focus on educational initiatives, including but not limited to libraries, child care, and preschool programs, career training, vocational and technical education, and similar projects that enhance educational opportunities within Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.

The deadline for first-quarter 2025 grant applications is Friday, January 24, 2025. Visit bit.ly/grant-portal to access the Community Foundation’s online grant portal.
